Corrupt Nigerian House of Senate passes 'Jail for Gay' Bill
The Nigerian Senate which is one of the most criminal institutions in the world, has passed the 'Jail the Gays' bill which has received much criticism worldwide but enjoy much support at home. In what will come as a blow to human rights organizations, the bill also outlaws anyone from forming organizations supporting gay rights and has a set up of prison terms of up to 14 years.
Nigeria, with an unemployment rate of over 40%, no stable electricity, no good infrastructures and with more than half of its population living below the poverty line has decided that gay people are the number one priority of all its problems. So the senate decides to ban gay marriage, practicing gay relationship and organizations supporting the gay communities.
The bill is now set to be sent to the Office of the President to be formally signed into law.
My opinion:
The bill is a travesty to human rights organizations around the world. All human should be able to practice whatever they deem fit for themselves. Notable Nigerians like Prof Wole Soyinka have in the past spoken out about the bill, but were shut down by ignorant people. One of the main reasons while the Nigerian populace supports the bill, boils down to religion. They also say that gay-ism is of the white man and that its un-African. But they forget that religion is also of the white man. Gays have been existing in Nigeria centuries before the white man stepped foot in Africa. Most say that being Gay is a disease and that they should be killed or removed from the society. But being gay is not a choice. If gay people could chose, am sure they would prefer to be straight. If you are gay, you are gay. People are born gay and they should be treated equally in the society. Men are mostly the target. While we straight people enjoy watching lesbian scenes in movies, and we all dream of threesomes with two girls that would include them touching each other, we forget that 2 beautiful women together constitute being part of the gay community. Men, on the other hand, with each other is not a good sight I accept but not liking it does not mean they should be punished for what they are.
I am using this means to enjoin everyone to be more tolerant of other human beings and their choices. After all, we are only in this world for a short time.. So enjoy your life and let others enjoy theirs.
